The future of management:  managing people or managing machines ?Today’s technological revolution is reshaping how organizations manage their people. Human resource divisions across all industries are beginning to harness new technologies, including analytics, big data, and artificial intelligence, in the pursuit of a data-driven approach to decision-making. Consequently, organizations face a drive toward both augmentation (in which data and technology extends people's capabilities) and automation (in which technology replaces people). We will examine and discuss the implications of automation and augmentation for the HR function. How are organizations benefiting from adopting analytics, big data, and artificial intelligence in their HR practices? What perils does HR face as the function is increasingly put under pressure to take on not only a strategic role in organizations, but a cost-cutting one as well? Will these technologies contribute to well-being in organizations or introduce new and unforeseen avenues of conflict? What social and ethical implications do automation and augmentation pose for workers who find themselves either replaced or rivaled by intelligent machines? Overall, the landscape is filled with opportunities and challenges that place HR at the core of business and people decisions. How organizations address these competing forces will determine how successfully they harness the potential of their workforce.  This is the first IESE Leading People Summit. This new summit series was launched to address the needs of HR professionals in today’s rapidly changing environment. The summit will bring together leading executives, consultants, and academics who will share and discuss their experience addressing and implementing cutting edge practices in leading people. We will take a critical look at the opportunities and perils for data-driven decision making in leading people.
