Technology, energy transition and geopolitics are disruptive changes that are putting companies’ long-term success and survival in jeopardy. In this context, the role of boards of directors in helping companies grow and develop in the long term is more important than ever: investment, innovation, jobs, and social prosperity depend on companies’ success. Recent large corporate crises (Crédit Suisse, General Electric, Wells Fargo, Carillion, Wirecard or Uber, among many others) suggest that their boards of directors were neither effective nor playing their expected role.
In this session, Professor Jordi Canals will present the results of a three-year international research project involving dozens of companies, on what makes boards of directors effective governance institutions. The results are included in his new book Boards of Directors in Disruptive Times (Cambridge University Press). Dr. Paul-Bernhard Kallen, Founding Partner of Acton Capital, will present his views and share his experience on boards of directors, and how to make them effective institutions to successfully support the firm in the long term.
